How TikTok Account Region Works and Official Ways to Change It

TikTok does not give every account a permanent open country switch. Account region is set from location-related signals and can only be updated when TikTok shows the control and the account meets the conditions on screen.

How TikTok determines region

TikTok’s help documentation states that when you sign up, the platform collects information about your location such as the region of your SIM card or IP address. That information is used to determine the country or region set on the account. Device language and later activity also influence what you see and which features are offered.

There is an important distinction:

• Account region – the country record TikTok stores for the account. It affects eligibility for some monetization programs, Shop tools, and certain policy applications.
• Content / viewing region – what the For You feed, trends and sounds look like in a given session. This can shift with IP, language preferences and recent activity even when the stored account region has not changed.

Official path when Account region is available

In the TikTok app:

1. Open Profile
2. Tap the Menu (☰)
3. Open Settings and privacy
4. Tap Account
5. Open User information (or Account information)
6. Tap Account region
7. Select the country or region and complete any steps TikTok shows

On the website (tiktok.com):

1. Log in and open your profile photo
2. Go to Settings
3. Under Manage account, open Account region
4. Select the location and follow the on-screen requirements

TikTok’s documentation lists conditions that may apply: you may need to have been in the target country and active on TikTok there, meet the minimum age for that country, settle rewards or payouts from the previous region, and use an up-to-date app version. If the Account region option is missing, TikTok has not enabled a change for that account at that time.

What a VPN changes (and what it usually does not)

A VPN mainly changes the IP address signal for the current session. That can alter recommendations, trends and some session-level behaviour. Shared consumer VPN ranges are frequently detected. A short or rotating VPN session alone rarely rewrites the stored account-region record that TikTok uses for monetization eligibility and some feature gates.

Longer, consistent signals from the target country (local network, sustained activity, sometimes a local SIM) are the pattern associated with successful official region updates in TikTok’s own materials and in widely reported user experience.

Content language without a full region change

Inside the official app you can adjust content preferences and preferred languages. That increases the share of videos in those languages in the feed without necessarily changing the formal account region. It is one of the lower-friction official levers available to every account.
